How to Install & Use OpenVPN on Debian (Network Manager)

Tested on Debian 11.3 “Bullseye” and newer. This guide explains how to import our OpenVPN profiles into Debian’s Network Manager and connect with your PremierVPN credentials.

1) Install the OpenVPN plugin

Open a terminal and run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y install network-manager-openvpn-gnome

2) Import your OpenVPN profile

  1. Click the network icon in the menu bar and open Settings.
  2. Under VPN, click the + button and choose Import from file….
  3. Select the .ovpn profile you downloaded from our Downloads Page.
  4. Enter your PremierVPN email and password when prompted, then click Add.
  5. Toggle the new VPN profile On to connect.
Verify your IP
Visit vpnleakcheck.com and confirm your IP shows the VPN location.
Where to find profiles:
  • Dedicated Server / IP profiles → Available under Attached Files in your Dashboard if requested.
  • Shared VPN profiles → Download from our Downloads Page.

3) Connect & Disconnect

Once imported, you’ll see your VPN profile in the Network Manager menu.

  • To Connect: Click the network icon → select your VPN profile (e.g. PremierVPN-SP-TCP) → click Connect.
  • To Disconnect: Click the network icon → select your VPN profile → click Turn Off.

When connected, all your internet traffic is routed through the VPN, encrypted and secured for privacy.

4) Tips for Using OpenVPN on Debian

  • You can add multiple profiles to quickly switch between different VPN servers.
  • If you have connection issues, confirm the VPN server is online, check logs for errors, or open a support ticket.
